This discussion will pertain to the American Style Ballroom dances.  American Style is different than International but will be covered later.  Despite their differences, the two styles have many similarities and crossover techniques.  Rhythm or Smooth, you must maintain Timing, Footwork, Posture, and Frame.    The Smooth dances are the easiest to begin with, there are only four: Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, & Viennese Waltz.
    
     Smooth refers to the elegant, graceful, flowing movement and appearance of the dances.  While they can be utilized to navigate a crowded or small dance floor, the smooth dances are most characterized by their ability to circumnavigate a large floor a few times per song.  Despite the ease and graceful look of the dances, make no mistake, they are athletic. During the dance you are either enjoying the movement of the music or planning your next sequence of patterns.  Once the music ends you can often feel short of breath with fatigued muscles.  On the positive side, you are filled with enough endorphins to make your manic Monday a great start to the week or take a great day into the record books.

    When people speak of Rhythm dances, they are basically talking about everything else remaining beyond the four smooth dances.  The range is quite broad but mainly covers around ten dances depending on how you count it.  Rumba, Cha cha, Swing, Salsa, Mambo, Merengue, Hustle, & Bolero to name a few.  These dances can be danced to practically any type of music, past to present, from Michael Buble’ to Michael Jackson, Julio Iglesias to Enrique Iglesias, or Louis Armstrong to LMFAO.  These dances can be described as the opposite of Smooth in that the goal is not to cover the most ground with grace and poise, but to accentuate the percussion with your body.  You and your partner must also tell a story or paint a picture thru your interpretation of the music.
